Anca Toma

Tashkent International School
EAL Coordinator, Secondary School
Tashkent, Uzbekistan
Anca’s passion for languages and education started at an early age while still living in her native Romania. At the age of 14, she emigrated with her family to Canada, where her English language learning journey was not always smooth. However, with continuous support and encouragement from her teachers, she was able to develop not only her language proficiency but also her confidence, both very important in a completely different educational context. Later, she completed a BEd in Bilingual Education and a MEd at the University of Ottawa and taught for many years in the French Immersion programme in Regina, SK, before embarking on international teaching at the Canadian International School, Singapore. During twelve years at CIS, Anca taught French and English across the IB PYP, MYP and DP and was the Secondary School Learning Leader for World Languages, working collaboratively with a team of passionate educators to align curriculum and promote multilingualism and mother tongue. Currently in her third year as EAL Coordinator for Secondary School and MYP/DP English B teacher at Tashkent International School, Uzbekistan, she is committed to creating supportive and respectful learning environments for all students, parents and colleagues. She always encourages students to use their L1 to support the development of academic language and concept literacy across the subject areas.
