I teach ESL to lower Primary through lower Secondary students. I enjoy "using" my older students to help motivate my younger ones. Once a week, my six 6th graders each write a letter to one of my six 2nd graders, who respond by writing a return letter. The letters are shorter or longer, very or only a bit illustrated, depending on the level of English. The older students are very proud and protective of "their" 2nd graders, who practically worship the 6th graders ("Pablo, you're so cool!"). The students write much more and more freely than when they tackle "proper" written assignments, and the students seek each other out in the hallways for brief, but entirely heartfelt, cross-cultural and cross age-group conversations.
Do other teachers have positive experiences with such exchange relationships?
