The British School in the Netherlands
Head of EAL BSN Primary Schools

Started life as a class teacher in Greater London thirty years ago! Moved into the field of EAL specialist as an Advisory Teacher in London, working with schools to develop and improve their EAL provision. Enjoyed collaborating with schools to develop Partnership Teaching and using collaborative learning. Moved to the Netherlands to work in an International School initially as EAL Coordinator for the primary school. Since then two more BSN Primary schools have been added and I became the Head of EAL for all three primary schools. Currently working with colleagues on embedding the use of the children's languages other than English, into teaching and learning. Very interested in how schools can build on and value the cultural identities of the children and how this can create a sense of place and belonging. Continually asking myself : How can schools best use their specialist EAL teachers for maximum impact? Is it realistic to expect all class teachers to be "EAL teachers" - and to what degree?
